Understanding Discraft Putt and Approach Discs

Hello Ledgestone fans! Discraft has provided some fantastic molds to disc golfers around the world through their sponsorship of the Ledgestone event. This program gives access to limited-edition runs, artwork, and plastics.

Today we’re going to pay homage to the disc category that has completed courses and finished holes to secure multiple Majors and World Championships. We’re talking about the World Leader in Disc Sports’ putt and approach discs.

We’ve taken the time to break down each disc in Discraft’s putt and approach lineup so you can visit shopledgestone.com and select your go-to putter to win your own tournaments and beat your friends.

APX - The APX is an understable putter with slight turn and minimal fade. Its slightly beaded rim adds comfortability in the hand and consistency on the green. The Ledgestone Edition APX was run in both 2020 and 2021. The APX is now out-of-production in favor of the Challenger and Focus.

Banger GT - The Banger GT is a fairly low-profile, beaded putter with a unique groove top providing natural thumb placement for any player’s grip. It has a straight flight with an overstable finish and remains a favorite for approach shots and arcing, hyzer-style putts. The Banger GT can be found in several variations at Shop Ledgestone:

Challenger - The Challenger is a beaded, slightly overstable putter with a deep rim. The smooth, rounded rim gives the disc a comfortable feel in the hand while the flat flight plate allows for an easy release. Shop Ledgestone has a wide variety of Challengers for both throwing and putting:

Challenger OS - The Challenger OS is a beaded, overstable putter with a deep rim. The OS’s flatter flight plate adds to the stability of the regular Challenger mold. Even as a 2-speed disc, the Challenger OS is known for its resistance to high-speed turn, filling the gap between Ringers/Zones and the rest of Discraft’s putter lineup. The Challenger OS can be found in premium Z Swirl and Big Z, as well as baseline Hard.

Challenger SS - The Challenger SS is an understable compliment to the classic Challenger. With a shallower profile, beadless rim, and flat flight plate, this mold provides straight flights right out of the box and the confidence to hit chains the first time. Shop Ledgestone provides the Challenger SS in Jawbreaker, Hard, and Titanium Swirl plastics.

Focus - The Focus is a large-beaded, slightly overstable putter. Soft fade gives the Focus predictability on the green while its rounded rim and domed flight plate catch chains. The Focus can be found in a few different plastics like Jawbreaker Z Flx, UV Z, Soft, and Jawbreaker.

Kratos - This beaded putter has limited glide and overstability, inspiring confidence in both high-speed and low-speed arms. The overstability makes the Kratos a strong candidate for a throwing putter as well as a putting putter. It boasts a very similar flight and feel to the Luna with the addition of a bead, helping hold the Kratos straighter in the air for longer periods of time.

Luna - The Luna was the first disc designed with, and for, Paul McBeth upon his arrival to Discraft in 2018. It has flourished alongside the popularity and success of the 6-time World Champion and has become one of the most used putters on the planet. The Luna’s beadless rim, limited glide, and overstability inspire confidence in both high-speed and low-speed arms. The overstability makes the Luna a popular choice for a throwing putter as well. With a best-selling putter like the Luna, the buying options are numerous:

Magnet - This neutral-to-stable putter is the longest tenured disc in Discraft’s putt and approach lineup. Released in 1993, the beveled rim and microbead of the Magnet immediately made it a favorite for all skill levels. The narrow and shallow rim makes for a comfortable grip when finishing out a hole on the putting green. Check out the Soft Magnet at Shop Ledgestone.

Putt’r - This tall-rimmed, unbeveled putter brings in all the feels of a traditional lid in disc golf form. It is neutral-to-understable and perfect for anhyzer releases and soft, floaty bids at the basket. Now out-of-production, the Ledgestone Edition Putt’r was last run in 2021.

Rattler - This neutral-flying putter has a thin rim and a tall, boxy profile. The Rattler feels like a small version of a traditional catch Frisbee and is a great choice for low-speed approaches to the green. The Ledgestone Edition Rattler was last run in 2021 and is currently out-of-production.

Ringer - The Ringer is a low-profile, overstable putter perfect for both putts and approaches. The thin rim makes it easy to handle and control on both forehand and backhand throws. The overstability holds true and resists turning over, fitting into Discraft’s putt and approach lineup just behind the Zone. Ringers can be found in a few different runs:

Ringer GT - The Ringer GT is a versatile disc used for both putts and approaches. Its overstability allows it to inspire trust in both calm and windy conditions, fitting into Discraft’s lineup just behind the Zone. The groove top (GT) gives throwers a natural thumb track when gripping the disc to produce maximum spin upon release. Shop Ledgestone has a variety of Ringer GTs in stock:

Roach - The Roach is a neutral stability putter with a beadless rim known for its comfortable feel in the hand and its glide while in flight. Stability-wise, it slots in just behind the Luna with an almost identical feel in the hand. It first appeared as the 2015 Discraft Ace Race prototype. It can now be found in multiple plastics:

Zeppelin - This tall-rimmed putter has a wide, oversized flight plate and a lot of similar qualities to a stereotypical catch Frisbee. It first appeared in 2011 as Discraft’s Ace Race prototype. Though now out-of-production at Discraft, the Ledgestone Edition Zeppelin has been run since 2021.

Zone - The Zone is Discraft’s most popular approach disc. Good for both forehands and backhands, this extremely overstable mold can handle significant torque and always provides a reliable finish to its flight, no matter the angle. The most popular approach disc in the world can be found at Shop Ledgestone:

Zone GT - This disc was released as a highly sought-after Battle Pack in 2023 pitting the Ringer GT flight plate against the Banger GT flight plate on top of the standard Zone mold. Good for both forehands and backhands, this extremely overstable mold can handle significant torque and always provides a reliable finish to its flight, no matter the angle. At baseline, the Zone GT is a standard Zone with added grip for throwing through the addition of a thumb track.

Zone OS - The Zone OS is the most overstable approach disc on the market. It will exhibit almost zero glide and head straight into its fading arc immediately upon release. Even on a normal anhyzer, the Zone OS rotates into its fade also immediately. Windy conditions will have no impact on this disc. Though a bit boxier than a standard Zone on the upper edge of the flight plate, the two molds feel very similar in the hand. Even at less than a year old, several different runs of the Zone OS can be purchased at Shop Ledgestone:
