The Discraft Cigarra: Precision, Power, and Versatility in a Fairway Driver

The Discraft Cigarra: Precision, Power, and Versatility in a Fairway Driver

Many have tried to create a fairway driver with the same flight as Discraft’s flagship midrange over the years, but something is always a bit different. That was until Anthony Barela and Discraft teamed up to create the newest driver on the market: the Cigarra.

This new industry-impacting disc will be available at Shop Ledgestone.

“I wanted to recreate the Buzzz flight in the feel of a fairway driver,” Barela said. “That way I could put a lot less power on it and still get the same flight that everyone loves out of a Buzzz.”

The Cigarra (Spanish for Cicada) is Barela’s first ever exclusive disc and it pulls its name from the popular 2023, English-named, insect-inspired fairway driver. At baseline, it is a modified, overstable version of the Cicada.

This new fairway driver combines control, power, and versatility. The Cigarra takes the best features of the Cicada and enhances them with a more overstable flight and pronounced fade. It’s designed for straight, reliable shots with a soft fade at the end—ideal for both controlled and powerful throws. Whether you're a seasoned pro or brand new player, this disc delivers consistency to every shot.

Versatility is what sets the Cigarra apart. From sidearms to standstills, this disc excels at any type of throw, offering stability and control even at high speeds. Its flight handles a variety of wind conditions with ease, ensuring a dependable performance in any weather.

Whether you're looking for a low-power, controlled throw or pushing it for distance, the Cigarra performs flawlessly in both scenarios. It’s the perfect choice for players who want precision without sacrificing power.

Side-by-side, the Cigarra boasts a slightly domier profile compared to the Cicada, but the underside of the two molds look and feel identical. For players who appreciate the domey profile of the Mantis, the Cigarra will feel natural in the hand as well. The Stalker is another Discraft mold with a similar profile, though the Stalker has a slightly rounder bottom edge to its outer rim along with a bead.

As explained in our piece on McBeth Mythology, the Cicada is a result of different attempts to create the Athena. Ultimately the Cicada is a more understable version of what Discraft eventually released as the sixth mold in the Paul McBeth Line. The new Cigarra bridges the gap between the overstability of the Athena and the understability of the Cicada to create a straight flight, bringing together a trio of complementary fairways that all feature a similar feel in the hand.

Fittingly, the Cigarra has torque resistance right between the Athena and the Cicada. Power throwers will need to hyzer-flip the Cigarra to flat or turn down their power slightly to achieve the desired straight flight, requiring a smooth release. Slower-to-mid tier arms speeds will enjoy a straight flight and a predictable finish from this driver.

The limited release of ESP Test Flight Cigarras featured numerous color combinations with Discraft’s signature 8-point swirl pattern. Future releases will bring more of the same beautiful color options right here at shopledgestone.com.
